The Army Corps of Engineers on Wednesday named Col. Robert Sinkler to lead the agency's efforts to improve flood protection in the New Orleans region.

Sinkler will lead the Hurricane Protection Office, a command set up after Hurricane Katrina to oversee flood protection work.

Sinkler takes over from Col. Michael McCormick, whose stint in New Orleans was brief after taking over the Hurricane Protection Office in August 2008.

Sinkler is the commander of the corps' Rock Island District, which handles work in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri.
